The Emergency Department at Ammochostos Hospital treated more than 11,000 patients over the summer
The Emergency and Trauma Department (TAEP) of Ammochostos Hospital in Paralimni treated more than 11,000 patients during the summer months — an average of around 120 people per day. This was reported by the State Health Services Organisation (OKYpY), which oversees Cyprus’s public hospitals.

The workload increased because of the tourist season: the population of the Ammochostos district grows significantly in summer, and the flow of patients increases along with it. The department operates around the clock, accepts patients without appointments and does not turn anyone away.
However, the order in which patients are seen is determined not by the time of arrival but by the severity of their condition. Patients are prioritised according to urgency: a person suffering a heart attack is seen immediately, while those who arrive with less urgent problems will have to wait longer.
In the summer of 2026, the hospital introduced additional measures: a fast-track clinic with increased staffing during peak hours, a short-term observation ward for those requiring brief monitoring, and increased staffing across all shifts.
The organisation also highlighted the work of medical staff who work 12-hour shifts under particularly intense pressure and do not know in advance either the number of patients or the severity of the cases.
