Tragedy off Cape Greco: well-known Cypriot businessman dies after vessel wrecked in storm

Severe weather off the coast of the Republic of Cyprus led to a tragedy in the Cape Greco area. Three vessels found themselves in danger due to strong winds and extremely difficult sea conditions. Two of them were thrown onto the rocks by the waves and completely destroyed. As a result of the incident, 76-year-old Limassol businessman and prominent figure in Cypriot motorsport Dimis Mavropoulos died.

The incident occurred in the Ayia Anargyri maritime area, between Cape Greco and Konnos Bay. At around 14:30, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre activated the national “Nearchos” plan, after which a large-scale rescue operation was launched. Helicopters, police, rescue units, the fire service and ambulance crews took part in it.

A total of six people were rescued during the operation. Mavropoulos was found unconscious and taken to Famagusta General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

His daughter and life partner were on board the vessel with the businessman. Both women were rescued. According to the latest information, the deceased’s daughter has already been discharged from hospital, while his partner continues to receive medical treatment for her injuries.

According to our sources, Mavropoulos’s vessel was driven onto the rocks during heavy seas and sustained serious damage. Law enforcement authorities are continuing to establish the exact circumstances of the tragedy, examining video footage and collecting eyewitness accounts.

Dimis Mavropoulos was well known in Limassol’s business circles. He was involved in trade and real estate and was also a prominent figure in Cypriot motorsport. In addition, he created a car museum in Limassol dedicated to the history of automobiles and classic cars.

The rescue operation took place in exceptionally difficult weather conditions. Strong winds and high waves turned the coastal area of Cape Greco into a dangerous trap for small vessels. Video footage from the scene shows the scale of the rough seas and the aftermath of two vessels colliding with the rocky shore.

The investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy is continuing. Specialists must establish the exact sequence of events that led to the destruction of the vessels and the death of the well-known Cypriot businessman.
