Tragedy in Xylophagou: two children found dead in locked car

A tragedy occurred in the village of Xylophagou: the bodies of two brothers aged 8 and 10 were found in a car. The children had come to Cyprus from Bulgaria in mid-May to spend the holidays with their father, who lives and works on the island.

According to preliminary information, the father left for work in the morning, and later his partner also left the house. The boys were left alone and, allegedly, climbed into a car parked near the house, got trapped inside and were unable to get out. Due to the intense heat, the children died.

The car was parked on a plot next to a residential house. The brothers were discovered only in the afternoon. To reach the children, rescuers had to break the car windows. Paramedics who arrived attempted to resuscitate them, but the boys could not be saved.

The British Bases police detained the children’s 30-year-old father and his 38-year-old partner. They are suspected of possible negligence that may have led to the children’s deaths.

Investigators are determining exactly how the boys ended up locked in the car and how long they were inside. CCTV footage is also being examined and a technical inspection of the vehicle is being carried out.
