Akrotiri Alarm Proves to Be False
Late Wednesday evening, an alert was issued in the Akrotiri area of Cyprus following a signal that was initially perceived as a potential threat.
However, British Base authorities later reported that the signal was a false positive. According to the Mayor of Kourion, Pantelis Georgiou, surveillance systems detected a suspicious blip, but it was not related to any hostile object.
Safety protocols were activated and sirens sounded in the area until the situation was clarified. The alarm was stood down after a few minutes.
The Mayor also noted that the municipality receives alerts directly from the British Bases' early warning system. Upon receiving the signal, city authorities promptly disseminated information to residents via social media and municipal communication channels.
Currently, about 4,500 residents are registered in the early warning system, while the area's population is approximately 40,000. Authorities are urging residents to sign up for the system to receive warnings more quickly.
