Drivers complain about the surface of the new road section to Tsada near Paphos

Andreas Kyriakou, chairman of the Chloraka Cultural and Environmental Association, has sent an open letter to Cyprus’s Minister of Transport, Communications and Works over the condition of the new section of road leading to the village of Tsada in the Paphos district. He refers to complaints from drivers who describe travelling along this section as follows: cars “float along it like boats at sea”.

In the letter, the author raises several questions with the department: who carried out technical supervision of the construction, whether the works underwent final acceptance, whether mandatory surface evenness measurements were taken and under which standards the facility was put into operation.

The Public Works Department has already responded to the complaints: the contractor has been instructed to carry out inspections and complete works to remedy the defects. Kyriakou, however, asks why these inspections were not conducted before the road was opened to traffic and notes that, judging by drivers’ reports, the problem persists.

The appeal emphasises that the issue concerns the spending of public funds and traffic safety: the road is used daily by residents of nearby communities. The author of the letter calls on Paphos MPs to demand explanations from the authorities, a full inspection of the section and the elimination of the deficiencies.

The letter is dated 16 September, and copies were sent to the director of the Public Works Department, the Chief of Police, the House of Representatives and the Office of the President. The main question Kyriakou raises is who is responsible for the defects and who will pay to have them repaired.
