The Church of Saint Nicholas has re-emerged from the waters of the Kouris reservoir

In Cyprus, the Church of Saint Nicholas has once again become visible after spending many years submerged in the Kouris reservoir. Due to a sharp drop in water levels, the church has been completely exposed — a rare and alarming sight for local residents.
The church was previously flooded following the construction of the Kouris dam and appeared above the surface only during periods of severe drought. Today, the water level in the island’s largest reservoir has fallen to approximately 12%, which has become one of the reasons for the church’s “return.”
Local authorities and experts emphasize that the appearance of the church is not a tourist attraction, but a clear symbol of the water crisis facing Cyprus. Similar scenes were observed during past drought years, but the current drop in water levels is considered particularly serious.
The Church of Saint Nicholas remains an important historical and spiritual symbol of the region, and its re-emergence from the water has once again drawn attention to the problem of water resource depletion on the island.
