Fire service officer of the Republic of Cyprus detained in the buffer zone near Pyla
Turkish Cypriot security forces detained an officer of the Fire Service of the Republic of Cyprus on 11 June in the buffer zone near the village of Pyla, despite the fact that he was there as part of an officially agreed UN convoy. The firefighter was inspecting the area as part of routine preparations for the summer wildfire season. Representatives of the Turkish Cypriot side stopped the convoy, detained the officer and took him to the Pergamos area. After the urgent intervention of United Nations peacekeeping mission (UNFICYP) personnel, who promptly contacted the Turkish Cypriot authorities, the detainee was released. The competent authorities of the Republic of Cyprus and intercommunal structures are now examining all the circumstances of what happened.
The village of Pyla remains the only place in the buffer zone with a mixed Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot population, and the situation there periodically escalates. For example, in April 2026, the appearance of a column of tanks north of the ceasefire line was recorded in the Pergamos area, as well as the setting up of a temporary Turkish Cypriot checkpoint after an attempt by Greek Cypriot veterinarians to enter deeper into the zone without special permission amid a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus called the previous actions a violation of the buffer zone status, and official explanations regarding the current incident involving the firefighter have already been requested through UN channels.
