Square and parking facility opened in Gouri for €1.8 million
On 21 June 2026, the official opening ceremony of a new village square and semi-underground parking facility took place in the mountain village of Gouri (Nicosia District). The €1.8 million project was financed through European funds and the national budget. Authorities present this facility as an important part of the state programme for the revitalisation and sustainable development of Cyprus's rural and mountain communities.
The new public space has been designed with respect for the traditional architectural character of Gouri, but has been fully adapted to modern standards of functionality, environmental sustainability and accessibility. The square is planned to host cultural events, village festivals, as well as a farmers' market to support local producers. According to Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou, speaking on behalf of the president, the infrastructure upgrade is intended to improve the quality of life of villagers and boost the region's tourist appeal. The village of Gouri, located on the eastern slope of Troodos near the Machairas forest (at an altitude of about 900 metres), is officially included in the state housing support scheme for remote and mountain areas, the aim of which is to halt population outflow and keep young people in their home villages.
