Man who attacked police during arrest detained in Famagusta
The Famagusta police detained a 29-year-old man who is suspected of attacking law enforcement officers, resisting arrest and making threats.
The incident took place the previous day at around 17:30. Officers from the Xylofagou and Xylotymbou police stations went to a village in the Famagusta district to search for the man, against whom a court arrest warrant had previously been issued for failing to appear in court in cases under consideration.
According to police, the suspect was found near his home. At the moment of contact with the officers, he was holding a knife. After being informed of the purpose of the visit and the need to execute the warrant, the man refused to comply with police instructions and allegedly attacked them.
As a result of the incident, two police officers suffered abrasions, mainly on their hands. Despite the resistance, the officers managed to detain the man. He was arrested both under the existing court warrant and for the alleged offences committed during the arrest.
The injured police officers were taken to the emergency department of the Famagusta General Hospital. After receiving first aid, they were discharged.
The detainee remains in custody, while the Xylofagou police station continues to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
