Heavy rains damage roads and agricultural land in Kyperounda

Extremely heavy rains struck the mountainous areas of Cyprus on Tuesday, causing significant damage to roads and agricultural land in Kyperounda. According to community leader Michalis Hadjimiachil, the rain continued for about an hour and a half and was unusually intense even for the winter months. “Entire roads disappeared from the map, gardens and fields were destroyed, everything was swept away by the river,” he said.

Due to the sharp rise in water levels, some residents had to be evacuated from the fields. Some people left their cars behind and made their way home on foot. Municipal services are now clearing the roads and dealing with the aftermath of the disaster. The main roads have already been reopened, but access to some rural roads remains unavailable. The Meteorological Service has issued a new yellow thunderstorm warning, which is in effect until 17:00 today. Today’s precipitation is expected to be less intense than yesterday’s.

From tomorrow, temperatures will begin to rise, reaching 37 degrees in the central part of the island and around 40 degrees on Friday.
