116 buildings in Larnaca on the verge of collapse

The authorities in Larnaca said that there are 1,084 potentially dangerous buildings in the region. After the inspections carried out, 204 properties have been deemed dangerous, and 116 of them have been classified in the highest risk category, with a real threat of collapse.

To date, specialists have carried out more than 300 visual inspections and have also prepared 228 technical reports. Measures to reduce the danger have already been taken at 31 properties: barriers have been installed, three buildings have been demolished, and the owners of a number of structures have begun reinforcing the buildings.

Eight buildings have already been officially declared dangerous, while the necessary procedures are still ongoing for another ten properties. In one case, the authorities were forced to issue a temporary evacuation order because the owners failed to comply with the instructions.

According to preliminary estimates, the cost of work to eliminate the threat for only 209 inspected buildings amounts to around €5.94 million.

The authorities urged owners to comply in a timely manner with safety requirements, and residents to report buildings that may pose a danger.
