Two unsafe buildings are being demolished in Larnaca: 40 residents left without authorities’ support
Forced demolition has begun in Larnaca of two apartment buildings deemed unsafe and unfit for safe living. As a result of this move, around 40 former residents, including families with children and elderly people, have effectively been left on the street due to the lack of systematic assistance and alternative accommodation options from the municipal authorities.
The decision to demolish the buildings was made by engineering services after a detailed inspection of the structures revealed a critical level of wear and a direct risk of collapse. Despite advance evacuation orders, the city administration did not provide the evicted residents with either temporary accommodation from the municipal housing stock or compensation to urgently rent other housing. The authorities said the properties were privately owned, so resolving the housing issue falls entirely on the owners and tenants themselves.
The affected residents are expressing extreme outrage at the officials’ actions, saying that it is virtually impossible to find affordable rental housing on the local market in the current conditions. Local public organizations have already become involved and are calling on the Ministry of Interior and social services to intervene to prevent a humanitarian crisis and provide those left homeless with at least temporary shelter through state support programs.
