Larnaca steps up its fight against mosquitoes

Since 21 August, the Larnaca municipal sanitation services have been carrying out additional inspections and treating areas where mosquito breeding sites may be present. According to municipal sanitation inspector Andreas Stergidis, Larnaca has operated a daily door-to-door home inspection programme for several years in cooperation with the state sanitation services.

Particular attention is being paid to places with stagnant water, where new breeding sites may emerge. Where necessary, specialists carry out the appropriate treatment. Special traps have also been installed across the city to monitor mosquito numbers as part of the national monitoring programme. Additional traps are planned to be installed soon.

Particular attention is being paid to Larnaca because it has major transport hubs — the airport, port and marina. The sanitation services are urging residents not to leave stagnant water near their homes. This includes containers, flowerpots, old tyres, gutters and other places where water may accumulate.

Residents are also advised to install mosquito screens on windows and doors and, where necessary, use mosquito nets over beds. Municipal services continue to accept residents’ reports and carry out inspections in response to complaints in order to identify areas requiring additional monitoring and treatment
