Larnaca to launch WhatsApp alerts for emergencies
The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation (ΕΟΑΛ) has created a special WhatsApp group for the оперативive coordination of municipalities and communities during extreme weather and natural disasters. Through this channel, local authorities will receive targeted warnings about dangerous phenomena, including forest and field fires in mountainous areas, which will speed up the deployment of emergency services.
The choice of messenger is due to its high popularity among officials, which makes it possible to minimise the time between the forecast and the start of rescue operations.
Warning data are received in real time from a network of 25 weather stations deployed across the district in cooperation with the KITASWEATHER project. The system records temperature, humidity, wind and precipitation. These weather data are also duplicated for the public on the online platform ΕΟΑΛ.
