Limassol to begin restoring old landfills for €6.3 million
A major project to restore and subsequently maintain old uncontrolled landfills will begin in the Limassol District. A budget of €6.3 million plus VAT has been allocated for this purpose. The project will cover several problematic locations in the region, with the exception of the site of the former large landfill in Vati, which is covered by a separate modernization program.
The main goal of the initiative is to minimize environmental damage and return contaminated land to a safe condition. As part of the planned work, contractors will excavate and isolate accumulated waste, remove the contaminated topsoil layer, and create a modern drainage network to divert leachate and rainwater. This is necessary to prevent hazardous substances from entering groundwater and to eliminate risks to the health of local residents.
The project is being financed under European cohesion programs, as Cyprus is under significant pressure from the authorities of the European Union over delays in the rehabilitation of closed landfills. All work will be carried out under the strict supervision of the Water Development Department, and the restoration of the sites is planned to be completed within the contract period, after which a long-term environmental monitoring stage will begin at these locations.
