Part of a Limassol beach illegally concreted to create a boat launch
At Tsiflikoudia Beach, west of Limassol’s old harbour, unidentified individuals concreted a section of the coastline without the authorities’ permission in order to create an improvised boat launch.
According to local media, the work began on the evening of 15 July. First, an excavator cleared the site of rocks and vegetation, after which a concrete mixer truck drove up to the shore and poured concrete just a few metres from the water. Witnesses claim that reinforcement bars were later to be laid and a second layer of concrete poured.
The Limassol Association of Recreational Fishing Boat Owners claimed responsibility for the work. Following an inspection, the district administration referred the case to the police, who are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
The district administration, together with the Environment Department, will organise the dismantling of the illegal structure.
Under the legislation of the Republic of Cyprus, construction in a protected coastal zone without a special permit is prohibited. Illegal structures are subject to demolition, while offenders may face substantial fines and other penalties.
