Road projects worth €493 million planned in Limassol to tackle traffic congestion

Cyprus authorities are preparing a major plan to develop the transport infrastructure of Limassol district

Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeadis will meet with the mayors of the municipalities of Greater Limassol to determine the priorities for road projects aimed at reducing traffic pressure in the city.

The total budget for the proposed road and urban development projects amounts to €493 million. The plan includes both quick measures to improve traffic flow and major infrastructure projects.

Short-term solutions include changes to traffic management, improvements to problematic intersections, the construction and modernisation of roundabouts, as well as the introduction of an intelligent UTC traffic-light management system.

The largest projects include the Limassol — Saittas motorway, costing €80 million, the northern bypass between Ypsonas and Polemidia, costing €60 million, and the construction of a second parallel road between Germasogeia and Agios Athanasios, costing €24 million.

The plan also includes the widening of Agios Athanasios Avenue, new connecting roads, the modernisation of interchanges and other projects that are at various stages of preparation.

The Ministry of Transport notes that population growth and Limassol’s rapid development have led to serious traffic problems. The new programme is intended to provide a long-term solution to ease congestion across the district’s road network.
