In Nicosia, electric buses will be charged using solar energy

A pilot project has begun in Nicosia, providing for the charging of electric buses using solar energy. The program was initiated by Cyprus Public Transport (CPT), which launched the first charging station in Cyprus with an integrated solar photovoltaic system and battery energy storage.
The station, located at the CPT technical center in the Geri area near Nicosia, is equipped with solar panels, a battery energy storage system (BESS), and modern fast-charging points. This allows a portion of the city’s electric bus fleet to be fully charged without connecting to the main electricity grid. In this way, CPT reduces operational costs and dependence on traditional energy sources.
The project is implemented under the EMS4PVBEV program (Advanced Energy Management System for PV-based EV Charging Stations with Integrated Battery Energy Storage), funded through the NextGenerationEU initiative via the Cyprus Research Fund.
According to company representatives, the launch of the station is an important step in the development of sustainable urban transport and the transition of Nicosia to a more eco-friendly mobility model. The intelligent management system efficiently distributes the generated solar energy between batteries and charging points, making the charging process completely “green.”
CPT plans to expand similar solutions to other areas of the island, with the long-term goal of converting the entire public transport system to renewable energy sources.
