New Mental Health Center Opens in Nicosia

A state-of-the-art mental health center was officially opened on Monday in Athalassa, Nicosia, with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, attending the inauguration ceremony.

In his remarks, the President highlighted the pressing need for such a facility, noting that the existing psychiatric hospital in Athalassa has been in operation since 1964. The new center is designed to modernize mental health services, with the President stating that providing such an advanced facility represents “a commitment by the state.”

The event marked the completion of the first phase of the center’s construction, a project that cost €12 million.

The development is co-funded by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility under the government’s “Cyprus Tomorrow” program.

The center features treatment rooms, an amphitheater, a gym, walkways, and ample parking.

The President also announced that the second phase of the center’s development will begin soon. Work is set to start once the budget is finalized in coordination with the Ministry of Finance.

When fully completed, the facility will meet all contemporary standards for mental health treatment, rehabilitation, and reintegration, offering comprehensive care to patients.
