Historic Fishing Trawler Launched in Limassol Port

A significant maritime artifact of the island's history, the long-serving fishing trawler Lambousa, has been relocated to the old port of Limassol and relaunched. This unique boat, the only one of its kind preserved in Cyprus, fished in the sea off Kyrenia for many years and, after 1974, off Limassol.

Built in 1950 in Perama, Piraeus, and registered in 1965 at the port of Famagusta, the trawler was named after the ancient district of Lambousa by its former owner.

"The vessel, which once played an important role in the fishing sector and the island's economy, represents the Greek shipbuilding tradition and is a 'living memory' of Cyprus' fishing history," stated the Cyprus University of Technology (Tepak).

The institution's Digital Heritage Lab contributed to the preservation of the 74-year-old vessel and its cultural history.

Using photogrammetry, the UNESCO research team digitized the boat's internal and external structures, creating a 3D model of the trawler.

"This initiative is one of our most significant achievements," said Dr. Marinos Ioannides, chair of UNESCO at Tepak.
