Advanced robotic system for orthopedic surgeries launched at Nicosia General Hospital

The State Health Services Organisation of Cyprus (OKYPY) has officially announced the introduction of the CORI robotic surgical system by Smith+Nephew at Nicosia General Hospital. Since June 24, 2026, knee and hip replacement surgeries under the state health insurance scheme GeSY have been performed using high-precision robot-assisted technologies.

Range of procedures performed:
The new equipment has been placed at the disposal of the orthopedic clinic at Nicosia General Hospital — the largest specialized medical center in Cyprus, where 9 leading orthopedic surgeons work, specializing in severe pathologies. With the CORI system, doctors have gained the ability to perform:
— Total and unicondylar (partial) knee replacement.
— Complex revision (repeat) knee surgeries.
— High-precision hip replacement.

Access to advanced care on the island:
Before the introduction of the CORI system, patients from Cyprus who needed robotic arthroplasty were forced to seek treatment in specialized clinics abroad. Bringing the system online within the country now allows citizens to receive world-class surgical care without having to travel overseas. The use of the robot ensures:
— Ideal anatomical positioning and fixation of implants.
— Optimal balance and stability of the ligamentous apparatus.
— A significant reduction in the risk of repeat surgeries.
— Shorter postoperative rehabilitation times for patients.

Technological advantages of the CORI system:
The CORI system is a direct successor to the NAVIO platform and is among the most advanced medical developments:
— Radiation-free 3D modeling. The system is capable of digitally mapping joint anatomy in real time directly in the operating room. Patients no longer need to undergo preoperative computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which completely eliminates radiation exposure.
— Control and virtual trial fitting. The surgeon can assess dynamic ligament stability and perform a virtual fitting of the prosthesis even before the first bone resections. At the same time, the robot does not replace the human: the doctor fully designs the individual surgical plan, and the robotic arm executes it with submillimeter precision.

Course toward the global robotization of medicine:
The purchase of the CORI orthopedic system was carried out as part of OKYPY's large-scale program to modernize Nicosia General Hospital. Earlier, in April 2026, the Cochlear Implant Center was launched at the ENT clinic of the same institution, where for the first time in world practice a robotic system and an innovative 3D exoscope were combined. According to OKYPY management, the current investments are laying a solid foundation for the further expansion of high-tech medical services in Cyprus' public sector.
