The launch of a body camera system for police officers in Cyprus is being delayed, despite the relevant law being adopted by parliament on March 26, 2026. At present, the authorities are continuing to prepare technical requirements and assess police needs before announcing a tender for the purchase of equipment.

The initiative was developed by the Ministry of Justice and the police with the aim of increasing transparency in law enforcement work, protecting citizens from possible abuse of power, and preventing unfounded complaints against police officers. In addition, video recordings are expected to strengthen the evidentiary basis in criminal investigations.

According to local media reports, specialists are currently developing the technical specifications for the cameras, including systems for storing and protecting recorded material. At the same time, the police are determining which units will be equipped with the devices first. It is expected that cameras will be issued to officers working at mass events, football matches, protest actions and other high-risk operations.

However, the authorities acknowledge that due to the high cost of the project, a tender is unlikely to be announced in the near future. For this reason, the full rollout of the system before the end of 2026 remains uncertain.

Under the adopted law, police officers will be able to activate the cameras during the detention and search of citizens, pursuit of suspects, vehicle checks, as well as when responding to unrest and arriving at the scene of a crime.

At the same time, the citizen must be informed about the start of recording immediately after the device is activated. The camera must also emit a light signal so that those nearby can see that video recording is taking place. The police officer must announce the date, time and place of the recording.

The recorded materials will be stored and destroyed according to special rules to be determined by the police leadership in a separate order.
