Strike at Cyprus energy company postponed for 15 days

An indefinite strike by employees of the state-owned energy company EAC has been postponed for 15 days in Cyprus. The decision was made after union representatives met with the energy minister, the company’s management and government representatives.

The agreement helped avoid possible rolling power outages that could have affected island residents during the evening peak hours — from 17:30 to 01:00.

The next round of negotiations is scheduled for July 22. By that date, the government must present concrete proposals on energy security and lowering electricity costs.

The unions say the main problem is the lack of a long-term energy development strategy. In their view, after part of the power plants are decommissioned in 2029–2030, Cyprus may face a serious shortage of generating capacity.

In addition, workers’ representatives are calling for a review of the energy market model. They believe that more active use of renewable energy sources and the development of EAC’s own solar power plants will help reduce electricity costs for consumers.

The unions also express concern about the financial situation of the state-owned energy company, arguing that a number of decisions made in recent years have had a negative impact on its operations.
