Blood stocks in Cyprus reach critically low levels

Head of the Blood Bank Androulla Panayiou has called on residents to donate blood, as the current week and the days after 15 August could prove particularly challenging for the healthcare system.

Around 350 units of blood are needed across the country every day. At the same time, only around 190–200 donations are scheduled for the coming days. According to Panayiou, if the situation does not change, supplies could come under serious threat.

The Blood Bank managed to collect a sufficient amount of blood over the weekend, but organised blood drives become significantly less frequent during the summer. In particular, campaigns in the army have ended, while similar events at companies, universities and other organisations are currently held less often because of holidays and business closures.

Residents of Cyprus, including those who are on holiday or planning to leave, are urged to find time to donate blood. The procedure takes around 15–20 minutes on average.

Blood donation centres are operating across the country. This week, they are open in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta.

In Nicosia, blood can be donated at the Engomi and Geri medical centres; in Limassol — at the old hospital; in Larnaca — on the third floor of the new wing of the general hospital; in Paphos — at the Royal Business Center blood donation centre; and in Famagusta — in Paralimni.
