Booking a driving test right after getting a learner’s permit in Cyprus: what’s the logic?

For those planning to obtain a permanent driving licence in the Republic of Cyprus, the Department of Road Transport (TOM) has set specific time limits. By law, you can take the practical driving test only 21 days after obtaining a learner’s licence. However, experienced instructors recommend booking the test date on the very first day you receive the learner’s document.

The main reason is the way the electronic slot allocation system works. Available slots at TOM are usually booked several months in advance. By signing up on the very first day, you make this waiting period run in parallel with your training. Over the months while you are waiting for your turn, you will have enough time to complete the mandatory hours with an instructor and master the theory. By the time the scheduled date arrives, you will be fully ready to take the test.

If you delay booking until later — for example, decide to finish your training first and only then book the test — you will find that after graduating from driving school you will have to wait several more months for your turn. During this period, without regular practice, driving skills fade, which reduces your chances of passing the test on the first attempt.
