Free online platform with electricity market data launched
On 24 June 2026, the Cyprus Institute unveiled CyCEM-Insights, a free online platform designed to aggregate and visualise data from the competitive electricity market (CEM). The service brings together fragmented information on the forward market, the day-ahead segment and balancing markets in real time, with hourly, daily and monthly breakdowns. Officially, the initiative is intended to eliminate the information vacuum and strengthen public debate based on facts.
However, the launch of the analytics hub comes amid severe structural constraints. Cyprus’s competitive market, launched in October 2025, operates within an isolated, small-scale power system and initially had only 17 participants. In such a configuration, there is a high likelihood that the former monopoly (EAC) will continue to dominate in practice, meaning that real pricing may remain quasi-market-based or covertly administered. Bringing publicly available data together in one interface will only highlight this problem, not solve it systemically.
The key indicator of CyCEM-Insights’ usefulness will be the depth and timeliness of data updates, especially in the balancing segment. For Cyprus’s power system, which is actively integrating renewable energy sources (RES) without interconnections to the mainland, real-time monitoring of imbalances is critically important. If the platform runs into delays in API updates, it will turn into a historical archive useless for commercial traders, and the declared transparency will remain a mere slogan.
