An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 recorded off the coast of Limassol

On September 7, 2025, at 01:02 local time, the Geological Survey of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus recorded an earthquake of magnitude 3.7 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located 25 kilometers northeast of the city of Limassol, and the hypocenter lay at a depth of 40 kilometers, indicating a moderate impact strength in the surrounding regions.

The event was weakly perceptible and was mainly felt in the Limassol area, with barely noticeable tremors in the Larnaca region. According to seismologists, the earthquake was limited in nature and posed no threat to infrastructure or public safety.

Experts of the Geological Service emphasized that such seismic activity is within the normal range for Cyprus. The region, located on the boundary of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates, is characterized by periodic but mostly low-intensity seismicity. Thus, although the earthquake was registered by specialized equipment, it passed without noticeable consequences and did not cause concern among the population.
