Residents of Strovolos demand barriers on the new avenue over the risk of cars falling into yards
In Strovolos, after the opening of the new four-lane Archiroupolis Avenue, a dangerous problem has emerged. The road runs 2–2.5 meters above the level of the residential development, while protective barriers are absent. About ten families living in five duplexes are in direct danger: if a driver loses control, cars could crash straight into the courtyards and verandas of their homes.
The Cyprus Department of Public Works said Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis has been informed about the situation. Engineers explained that barriers were not included in the project because of the urban speed limit of 50 km/h. However, given the real danger, the department has decided to urgently install metal barriers. In addition, following residents’ complaints about the proximity of the road, the authorities will carry out an acoustic study to assess the need for noise barriers.
