Residents of Cyprus raise the island’s flag on Armenia’s highest peak

A group of mountaineers living in Cyprus climbed the northern summit of Mount Aragats in Armenia, at an altitude of 4090 metres — the highest point in the country.

Alexander Larin and Mikhail Omelchuk reached the summit, where they raised the flag of Cyprus, took commemorative photographs and left engraved stones brought from the island as a symbol of friendship between Cyprus and Armenia.

The participants said that heavy snowfall and dense fog prevented them from reaching the cross at the summit.

Another team, consisting of Andrey Kogun and 13-year-old Peresvet Larin, climbed the southern summit of Aragats, which stands at 3879 metres. Peresvet became the youngest resident of Cyprus to conquer a peak higher than 3800 metres.

The organisers noted that the expedition was dedicated to strengthening ties between Cyprus and Armenia, developing active tourism and promoting mountaineering among young people.
