Limassol Zoo Will Not Be Closed

The Limassol Municipal Council rejected a proposal to liquidate the local zoo. The project by the Cyprus Center for Environmental Research, which proposed turning the facility into an educational “Biodiversity Center” without animals in its current form, did not secure the required number of votes: 14 councillors were against closure, 10 in favor.

Limassol Mayor Yannis Armeftis emphasized that the zoo is a historic landmark of the city and is cherished by residents as a place for family leisure. Nevertheless, the authorities will continue discussing the modernization of the facility. The plans include finding a compromise to improve animal welfare, upgrade the public space and bring the zoo into line with modern environmental standards.
