US President Donald Trump secretly left Turkey over fears of an assassination attempt by Iran.

US President Donald Trump left Turkey in July as part of an unprecedented security operation, details of which became known only a month later. According to an investigation by The Washington Post, after the NATO summit in Ankara ended, Trump publicly boarded the familiar presidential Boeing 747, but just minutes later secretly left the aircraft and transferred to a smaller C-32A military plane.

According to a US official familiar with the operation, the reason was a «credible threat» of an assassination attempt linked to Iran. Washington has not officially disclosed the nature or source of the threat, or how specific the plans for a possible attack were. The Wall Street Journal had previously reported that US authorities received intelligence from Israel about a possible plot against the president, although some sources at the time assessed the threat as not fully corroborated.

The presidential aircraft became a decoy

On July 8, Trump was in Ankara for the NATO summit. He had flown to the meeting aboard a new Boeing 747-8, donated to the United States by Qatar and converted for presidential duties. Before departing, however, Trump said he would return from Turkey aboard the old Air Force One — the blue-and-white Boeing 747 well known to journalists.

The president explained this with a practically innocuous reason: the new aircraft was scheduled to arrive earlier at the US Air Force base in Mildenhall, Britain, so that American service members could inspect it.

As has now emerged, this public scenario itself was part of the cover operation.

Trump did indeed walk up the stairs of the old Air Force One in front of television cameras. He said goodbye to those present, and nothing outwardly indicated that the plan had changed.

But once the president was inside the aircraft, the secret part of the operation began.

How Trump was taken off Air Force One

According to The Washington Post, Trump and several aides exited the presidential Boeing on the side opposite the journalists. They used an ordinary airport service vehicle designed to deliver food and other supplies to aircraft.

The vehicle’s hydraulic container was raised to the side of Air Force One. Trump got inside the vehicle, which then drove away from the presidential Boeing and headed toward the nearby C-32A.

Airport video recordings reviewed by journalists make it possible to reconstruct the sequence of events. The cameras captured the vehicle itself, its position next to the aircraft and its subsequent movement toward the C-32A. For a time, the vehicle disappeared from the cameras’ view behind the engines of the second aircraft.

Thus, outwardly, everything appeared to show that Trump remained aboard Air Force One. Moreover, the journalists from the presidential pool were indeed on board that aircraft.

That was why the Boeing 747 effectively became a decoy aircraft.

The most unusual part — journalists were not the only ones deceived

The operation was designed not only to mislead a potential adversary. According to WP, some White House staff members also did not know that the president had already left Air Force One.

The journalists aboard the old Boeing were instructed to close the window shades. They believed they were accompanying the president to the United Kingdom.

Later, Trump told journalists that the closed shades were necessary because the flight could be dangerous. He also said that he was constantly receiving threats and that he was at the top of Iran’s target list.

This detail is particularly important from the perspective of counterterrorism protection. The fewer people who know the real route and whereabouts of a protected person, the harder it is for an adversary to build an operation based on leaked information.

Why the C-32A was chosen

The C-32A is a modified Boeing 757 used by the US Air Force to transport senior government officials. The aircraft is considerably smaller than the presidential Boeing 747 and visually less conspicuous.

What mattered most was not only the aircraft’s technical equipment, but also the ability to conceal its role in transporting the president.

For the secret flight, the C-32A used the call sign Reach 18 rather than the standard presidential Air Force One designation. According to data reviewed by The Washington Post, systems that would have made the aircraft easy to track were switched off.

This created several layers of uncertainty at once: a potential observer could see the presidential Boeing and track its route, but would not receive reliable information about where Trump himself was at that moment.

An important detail: Trump did not fly to the US aboard the C-32A

This is where the initial retellings of the story became confused.

The C-32A did not take Trump directly from Turkey to the United States, but to RAF Mildenhall, a US Air Force base in the United Kingdom.

At the same time, the old Air Force One, carrying journalists and White House staff, continued flying in practically the same direction.

According to WP, the C-32A arrived at Mildenhall at approximately 10:20 p.m. local time, while the old Air Force One arrived at about 10:29 p.m. Publicly, however, everything continued to appear as though the presidential Boeing had transported Trump from Turkey.

After landing, Trump appeared before the cameras again, this time near the old Air Force One. Exactly how he was transferred from the C-32A back to that aircraft remains unclear.

The president then transferred to the new Qatari Boeing 747 and continued on it to Washington.

Why doubts arose about the new Air Force One

The story has another important layer.

Trump flew to Turkey aboard the new Boeing 747 that Qatar had given to the United States. The aircraft is intended for temporary use as a presidential plane while Boeing delays the development of new standard Air Force One aircraft.

However, questions about its defensive capabilities had arisen even before the current investigation was published.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the new aircraft did not have all the defensive systems installed on traditional presidential aircraft. After US intelligence received information about a possible assassination attempt, Trump was advised to use the old Air Force One for his return from Turkey.

This explains why the president’s decision to transfer to the old aircraft appeared unexpected at the time.

It is now becoming clear that even the old Air Force One may have been only one part of a more complex scheme.

What is known about the Iranian threat

The most sensitive part of the story concerns the nature of the intelligence.

The Washington Post writes of a credible threat linked to Iran. According to the newspaper, it was this threat that triggered the operation to conceal the president’s route.

The publication does not disclose the specific scenario of the alleged attack. It does not say whether the threat involved a missile strike, a drone attack, sabotage or an assassination attempt by another method.

Earlier, in July, The Wall Street Journal reported on Israeli intelligence concerning a possible plan to kill Trump. At the same time, some US officials considered the threat insufficiently corroborated.

It is therefore more accurate to speak not of a proven «Iranian assassination attempt», but of intelligence about a threat that US agencies considered serious enough to change the route and carry out a deception operation.

Why Turkey became a particularly sensitive location

Ankara was not an accidental location in this case.

Turkey is a NATO member and a key US partner, but it also shares a border with Iran. In July, the regional situation remained extremely tense: US forces were striking Iran, while Tehran and Washington were engaged in open military confrontation.

Therefore, the presence of the US president in a country geographically located directly next to Iran objectively created additional risks.

In such a situation, even a relatively small leak of information about the exact departure time, route or type of aircraft could potentially have mattered.

This was not the first use of a decoy aircraft

The concept itself is not entirely new.

The Washington Post recalls a similar episode during President Bill Clinton’s trip to Pakistan in 2000. At that time, the actual presidential aircraft was used as part of a diversion, while Clinton travelled on another aircraft.

However, the current operation differs in the scale of its information cover.

In 2026, it was not simply a matter of changing aircraft. The scenario included Trump publicly boarding Air Force One, journalists being present on board, the use of airport equipment to secretly move the president, a separate military aircraft and the preservation of a false picture of events even after departure.

From the perspective of protecting national leaders, this is a classic deception operation — an operation designed to mislead a potential adversary.

Why this story matters

The main conclusion from what happened is not the unusual nature of the «catering truck» itself. Much more important is that US agencies considered it necessary to conceal the president’s actual whereabouts for several hours even from some people in his own entourage.

This points to two things.

First, the perceived level of threat was high enough to abandon the standard procedure for a presidential flight.

Second, Washington was prepared to sacrifice informational transparency for the security of the head of state.

From a security perspective, this logic is entirely understandable: if a potential adversary does not know which aircraft the president is on, which aircraft is the real one and which route he is actually taking, planning an attack becomes significantly more difficult.

But there is also a reverse side. For a democratic system, it is highly unusual for an administration to publicly provide one account of the president’s movements while concealing the actual route even from accompanying journalists and some administration staff.

That is why the current story concerns not only Trump’s security, but also the broader question of the limits of secrecy surrounding presidential movements.

What has been confirmed and what remains unknown

At present, the following sequence is the most reliably confirmed: Trump flew to Ankara aboard the new Qatari Boeing 747, publicly boarded the old Air Force One, then secretly transferred via an airport service vehicle to the C-32A and flew on it to the United Kingdom. The old Air Force One, carrying journalists and some White House staff, continued flying separately, after which Trump appeared publicly again and transferred to the new Boeing 747 for the rest of his return to the United States.

The exact nature of the threat, its original source, the specific intelligence received by US agencies and the full circle of people briefed on the operation remain unknown.

The White House did not directly confirm the details of The Washington Post investigation. Its spokesperson merely said that the president has numerous enemies who pose a threat and that the administration is using every available means to protect him. The Pentagon and Secret Service also did not disclose details of the operation.

Thus, the story of the «catering truck» is merely the most spectacular detail of a much more serious operation. In essence, US agencies created a false picture of the president’s movements for several hours: journalists saw Air Force One, whose data could be tracked, while Trump himself was aboard another military aircraft. If the intelligence about the threat is fully confirmed, the operation will become one of the most unusual examples of presidential counterintelligence protection in recent years.
