Five minutes unattended almost ended in tragedy: in Turkey, a five-year-old girl was rescued after being carried out to open sea

A tragedy that could have ended in the most unfortunate way almost occurred on Turkey's western coast. In Aydın Province, coast guard officers spotted a strange object in open sea during a routine patrol — a lonely inflatable mattress drifting away.

When the boat came closer, the rescuers saw a five-year-old girl on it. The child was far from shore and could not get back on her own. The sailors immediately lifted the little girl aboard and brought her ashore, where she was handed over to her anxious parents.

It later emerged that the girl had been spending time on the beach with her family. According to her parents, they were distracted for just a few minutes, but that was enough: a strong wind caught the light inflatable mattress and rapidly carried it out to sea. Due to the wind and the current, the distance from shore was increasing literally by the minute.

Fortunately, a coast guard patrol was passing nearby at that moment. It was thanks to the crew's attentiveness and the rescuers' quick reaction that the child was found before the situation became critical.

Specialists once again remind vacationers that inflatable mattresses, rings and other floating toys are not rescue equipment. In strong wind, they can be carried away from shore very quickly, and children must remain under constant adult supervision even in shallow water.

This incident ended safely, but it became yet another reminder of how dangerous the sea can be and how quickly an ordinary rest can turn into an emergency.
