DISY and DIKO begin talks on the post of Speaker of Parliament
Negotiations between Cyprus’s largest parties over the future leadership of parliament are gaining momentum. The first meeting between DISY Chair Annita Demetriou and DIKO leader Nikos Papadopoulos did not produce a final result, but it outlined the key positions of the sides.
According to sources, Annita Demetriou made it clear that keeping the post of Speaker of Parliament is a prerequisite for any further agreements. In response, Nikos Papadopoulos said that DIKO’s secretariat had decided to hold consultations with all parliamentary parties, and that the final position would be determined after discussion within the parliamentary group.
The situation prompted mixed reactions within DIKO. Some party representatives viewed DISY’s position as an attempt to apply pressure and impose a predetermined decision. The Democratic Party stressed that it did not intend to “issue blank checks” and would first complete a round of talks with all political forces.
Nikos Papadopoulos himself confirmed on Ant1 television that the meeting with Annita Demetriou was only the first exchange of views. He added that he plans to hold similar contacts with other party leaders as well.
Amid the ongoing consultations, the scenario in which DIKO could nominate its own candidate for the post of Speaker of Parliament remains on the table.
Talks between the parties are taking place against the backdrop of a new political balance taking shape after the parliamentary elections, and the distribution of key posts is becoming one of the main elements of future coalition agreements.
