Cyprus ranks third in the EU by number of Ukrainians with temporary protection

Cyprus ranked third among European Union countries by the number of beneficiaries of temporary protection from Ukraine per 1,000 inhabitants. In June, the figure stood at 26.8 people per 1,000 inhabitants, Eurostat reports.

In June 2026, 31,690 people with temporary protection from Ukraine were in Cyprus. In May, their number stood at 31,620.

The highest figure was recorded in Czechia — 35.8 people per 1,000 inhabitants. Slovakia ranked second — 27.2. Across the EU, there were 9.8 beneficiaries of temporary protection per 1,000 inhabitants on average.

As of 30 June 2026, 4.41 million people who had fled Ukraine held temporary protection status in EU countries. Compared with the end of May, their number increased by 24,380, or 0.6%.

Germany hosted the largest number of beneficiaries of temporary protection — 1,286,230 people, accounting for 29.2% of the total in the EU. It was followed by Poland — 961,170 people, or 21.8%, and Czechia — 390,810 people, or 8.9%.

Compared with the end of May, the number of beneficiaries of temporary protection increased in 24 of the 27 EU countries.

The largest increases in absolute terms were recorded in Italy — by 4,115 people, Czechia — by 3,835, and Germany — by 2,960.

The number of beneficiaries of temporary protection decreased in Poland — by 6,335 people, Belgium — by 35, and Ireland — by 15.

According to Eurostat, 98.5% of beneficiaries of temporary protection in the EU at the end of June were Ukrainian citizens. Adult women accounted for 43.4% of the total, adult men for 27%, and minors for 29.6%.

Temporary protection is granted in accordance with the EU Council decision of 4 March 2022, adopted after the start of the mass movement of people from Ukraine in connection with the war.

On 13 June 2025, the European Council approved extending temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens until 4 March 2027.
