Waste fees in Cyprus to rise by up to 40% due to new landfill tax
Household and business waste collection bills in Cyprus will rise by about 23–80 euros per year this year. The reason is a new tax on sanitary landfill disposal, which parliament plans to adopt by mid-July 2026. This measure is necessary to meet commitments to the EU, which will allow Cyprus to receive payments of 23 million euros and 25 million euros under European programmes.
How much will bills increase?
The government proposes introducing the tax gradually: starting at 10 euros per tonne in 2026 and then gradually raising the rate to 70 euros per tonne by 2039.
Without the launch of a separate waste collection system, the financial burden on one household will average:
• 2026 (first half): 4.77 euros
• 2027: 9.59 euros
• 2028: 15.24 euros
• 2030: 25.80 euros
• 2035: 53.08 euros
• 2040: 76.42 euros
If the tax is approved immediately at the maximum rate of 35 euros per tonne without introducing a separate collection system, the fixed waste bill for residents will jump by 39.5% at once (about 79 euros per year). With the introduction of separate waste collection, these amounts should decrease.
