Animal shelter in Cyprus is left with almost no volunteers and asks for help

One of the largest animal shelters in Cyprus — Animal Rescue Cyprus in Paphos — has appealed to residents of the island for help. At the moment, only 11 volunteers care for 1,350 animals, whereas just a few years ago there were significantly more.

The shelter houses dogs, cats, horses, donkeys and goats. The organisation exists entirely on donations and does not receive state funding. According to fundraising officer Soumanee Okse, only six volunteers currently work there on a regular basis, with another five or so helping from time to time. This is critically insufficient, especially given that requests to rescue animals come in every day.

The shelter is especially in need of helpers in the morning from 08:00 to 11:00 and in the evening from 16:30 to 18:00, although volunteers are welcome at any time. Duties include walking dogs, feeding animals, cleaning enclosures, caring for the animals, helping with events and collecting donations.

No special experience is required, although it is welcome when working with large or timid dogs. Due to the shortage of staff, opportunities for proper training of new volunteers are limited.

According to shelter representatives, the number of volunteers has fallen by around 70% in recent years. The reasons include fewer long-term volunteers, the reduction of international volunteer programmes, financial difficulties and a decline in tourist flow, which previously helped attract many helpers.

The shelter's financial situation also remains extremely difficult. Donations are decreasing while the number of animals in need is growing. The main expenses are connected with food, veterinary care, medicines, vaccinations, cleaning supplies, utility bills and the daily upkeep of the animals.

Representatives of Animal Rescue Cyprus note that monetary donations are especially needed right now, as they allow the most urgent needs to be covered quickly. The shelter also needs dog and cat food, hay, household cleaning products, towels, blankets, cat litter, toys, treats and veterinary supplies.
