Christopher Nolan’s brother hid from the FBI, used the name “Oppenheimer” and tried to escape from prison
While Christopher Nolan was making films that turned him into one of the most famous directors of our time, his older brother found himself at the centre of an international criminal investigation. False identities, million-dollar fraud, an alleged contract killing, an FBI arrest and an attempt to escape from a federal prison — the story is so unbelievable that many people long considered it an internet myth. However, most of the events are indeed confirmed by court documents. At the same time, some popular claims turned out to be greatly exaggerated.
Matthew Francis Nolan is Christopher’s older brother and the brother of screenwriter Jonathan Nolan. Unlike his famous relatives, he was never connected with the film industry and worked in business. In the early 2000s, he frequently travelled between the United States and Central America, using several fictitious identities. One of them was the name Matthew McCall-Oppenheimer. Investigators claimed that, under this name, he presented himself as an heir to the famous Oppenheimer family, which owned the De Beers diamond empire, in order to gain the trust of potential partners. The reference was specifically to the surname of a wealthy business dynasty, not to the physicist Robert Oppenheimer.
The chronology of events began to unfold rapidly in 2005. American businessman Robert Breska said that his accountant and financial adviser, Robert Curtis Cohen, had disappeared along with several million dollars invested in investment projects. According to Costa Rican prosecutors, Breska hired Matthew Nolan to help recover the money. Investigators believed that it was under the name «Matthew Oppenheimer» that Nolan met Cohen and persuaded him to come to a meeting in San José.
On 6 March 2005, surveillance cameras recorded Cohen together with Nolan. It was the last time the financier was seen alive. Several days later, he was found dead. According to investigators, the man had been subjected to brutal torture. Costa Rican prosecutors suspected Matthew Nolan of organising the kidnapping and murder, but he himself denied any involvement.
Nolan managed to avoid arrest for several years. During the same period, his younger brother Christopher was experiencing the most successful phase of his career. In the summer of 2008, the film «The Dark Knight» became a worldwide hit and grossed more than a billion dollars at the box office, while Matthew was already on the radar of American and Costa Rican law enforcement agencies. In addition to the murder investigation, he was also accused of financial fraud involving the illegal acquisition of more than $600,000.
In 2009, FBI agents arrested Matthew Nolan in Chicago at the request of the Costa Rican authorities. He was placed in a federal detention facility, where one of the most unusual episodes in the story took place. According to court documents, Nolan made a long rope from bedsheets tied together and attempted to descend from the window of a high-rise building. The escape attempt failed — he was quickly discovered and detained. He later pleaded guilty to possessing items intended for an escape and received an additional prison sentence.
However, the most serious accusation was never proven. During consideration of the extradition request, a US federal court concluded that the evidence presented was insufficient to hand Nolan over to Costa Rica in connection with the murder case. As a result, the extradition did not take place, and he was never convicted in that case. This is why claims that Matthew Nolan was a «hitman» are inaccurate: it is more correct to say that he was suspected of or accused of organising the crime, but the court did not find him guilty.
The story once again attracted the attention of millions of people after the release of the film «Oppenheimer» in 2023. Social media users noticed the coincidence between the surname used by the director’s brother and the title of the film. This gave rise to a theory that Christopher Nolan had made the film specifically so that when people searched for the words «Nolan» and «Oppenheimer», search engines would show the movie first rather than the criminal history of his brother. However, there is no evidence to support this version. The director himself has repeatedly said that the idea for the film came after he read the biography American Prometheus, the screen rights to which he acquired long before production began.
Today, Matthew Nolan’s story remains one of Hollywood’s most unusual family secrets. It genuinely includes real criminal investigations, an FBI arrest, the use of the pseudonym «Oppenheimer» and an attempt to escape from prison. But it is equally important to remember that many viral posts omit a key detail: despite the serious accusations, the court never found Christopher Nolan’s older brother guilty of murder or of being a professional hitman.
