Farm of the Future: The Netherlands Begins Growing Meat Without Animals

Scenes from science fiction seem to be becoming reality. The first farm in the world that produces meat without slaughtering animals has opened in the Netherlands. Instead of barns, it uses bioreactors here — special systems where full muscle tissue is grown from a small sample of cells.

The pilot farm started operating in the village of Schipluiden in the province of South Holland. The project was created not for mass production, but to test how effective and economically viable the technology will be under real-world conditions. Scientists grow meat cells in a controlled environment, maintaining the necessary temperature, oxygen levels and a set of nutrients.

The project’s authors say that the cultivated meat is virtually indistinguishable from regular meat in either taste or texture. Moreover, the technology makes it possible to change the product’s composition by adjusting the levels of proteins, fats and other nutritional components. In the future, this could give producers the ability to create meat with predefined properties.

The initiative is led by RespectFarms and local farmer Corne van Leeuwen. According to him, the new technology is not meant to replace traditional livestock farming, but could become an additional line of work for farmers. The project has already received support from the authorities of South Holland province and European innovation programmes.

For now, such meat is not yet approved for commercial sale in European Union countries, but the opening of the farm is considered an important step for the entire cultivated meat industry. If the technology proves profitable, similar complexes could appear around the world in the future, radically changing the familiar idea of how meat is produced.
