The Trauma, Disasters and Crises Working Group in Northern Cyprus has issued a bulletin with recommendations for the public following the sinking of a vessel off Girne on 30 August. Specialists emphasise that an emotional reaction to what happened is a normal response to collective trauma, not a sign of weakness.

The group advises limiting exposure to news and social media: repeatedly returning to the same footage and reports increases anxiety. Instead, people are encouraged to maintain their usual daily routine, stay in contact with loved ones and avoid being alone.

A separate section of the recommendations focuses on children and is divided by age group. Specialists advise shielding children under five from images and news about the incident and not discussing what happened in their presence, while maintaining their usual routine. With children aged 6 to 11, adults should talk through what they have already heard, answering briefly and in an age-appropriate manner, and limit their access to news feeds. Teenagers aged 12 and over are encouraged to review information together with adults, assess the reliability of social media posts and avoid sharing distressing footage.

For older people, the group recommends regular communication and specific rather than general questions, calm access to verified information and support for daily habits — sleep, eating, taking medication and physical activity. At the same time, older people should retain the right to make their own decisions.

The bulletin notes that care within the community, reliable information, trusted relationships and solidarity remain important protective resources during a difficult period.
