Limassol once again proposes building an elevated railway
A concept for an elevated railway has been presented in Limassol, intended to connect the city’s main districts (Germasogeia, the center, the marina and the western areas) into a single eco-friendly transport system. The idea was put forward by Deputy Mayor Dimos Katsis, and the visualization was prepared by digital designer Marinos Protopapas.
Why the city needs this project:
• Limassol is heavily congested with traffic — around 13,000 new cars are registered here every year, while the road network has expanded only minimally over the past 15 years.
• Cyprus currently has no rail passenger service at all, so the entire burden falls on private cars and buses.
Historical context and earlier ideas:
• The island already had a government railway from 1905 to 1951 (linking Famagusta, Nicosia and Morphou), but it was closed because it was unprofitable.
• In 2022, the Ministry of Transport estimated that building a full railway would cost more than 1.5 billion euros.
• In November 2025, the Cyprus Railways Consortium had already proposed rail transport for Nicosia and Limassol, but without a feasibility study.
What stage is the project at now:
At the moment, this is solely a concept. The project has no budget, no timeline and no funding sources defined, and the Transport Ministry has so far only said it is ready to consider the idea of a conventional tram.
