Flight cancellations and delays in Cyprus: how to claim compensation
Since the beginning of 2026, the European Consumer Centre Cyprus has received around 400 complaints from island residents. This is almost as many as during the whole of 2025, when 475 complaints were registered. Most complaints are related to flight cancellations and delays, as well as problems with baggage handling.
According to the centre, around 65–70% of cases under review are resolved in passengers’ favour through out-of-court settlements with airlines.
Anastasia Stylianidou, Director of the European Consumer Centre Cyprus, advises passengers to contact the airline directly first. If the issue is not resolved or the airline’s response is unsatisfactory, passengers can contact the European Consumer Centre free of charge.
She also warned about private companies that handle compensation claims for a fee. In some cases, intermediaries retain part of the payment, while sometimes money transferred by the airline does not reach the passenger immediately.
When dealing with baggage problems, it is important to comply with the established deadlines. A complaint about damaged baggage must be submitted within 7 days, while a complaint about delayed baggage delivery must be submitted within 21 days. In the event of baggage damage, the relevant document must also be completed at the airport.
